Lake Bogoria is a saline, alkaline lake that lies in a volcanic region in a half-graben basin south of Lake Baringo, Kenya, a little south of the equator. Lake Bogoria, like Lake Nakuru, Lake Elementaita, and Lake Magadi further south in the Rift Valley, and Lake Logipi to the north, is home at times to one of the world’s largest populations of lesser flamingos. The lake is a Ramsar site and Lake Bogoria National Reserve has been a protected National Reserve since November 29, 1973. Lake Bogoria is shallow (about 10 m depth), and is about 34 km long by 3.5 km wide, with a drainage basin of 700 km2.

Local features include the Kesubo Swamp to the north and the Siracho Escarpment to the east, both within the National Reserve. The lake is also famous for geysers and hot springs along the bank of the lake and in the lake. In four locations around the lake can be observed at least 10 geysers, which erupt up to 5 m high. Geyser activity is affected by the fluctuations of lake level, which may inundate or expose some geysers.

Best time to visit Lake Bogoria

Lake Bogoria National Reserve offers year-round enjoyment of the Kenyan geological bush, and the climate enhances your experience with moderate temperatures and seasonal rains. For the most part, the dry and wet seasons mirror what is common in other areas of Kenya.

Some years, though, the reserve has an unusual weather pattern of long rains in July and August. The long cool-dry season is from July to October, and we consider this to be the best time to visit. The reduced rainfall limits the drinking water that is available to fauna, so animals tend to congregate around the few remaining fresh watering holes.

This time of year, though, coincides with summer school breaks, so the arrival of enthused families increases visitor levels.Should you be traveling to Lake Bogoria during this time, though, you should note that cooler temperatures are common in the higher elevations around the reserve. Therefore, we recommend that you bring a jacket or warm fleece on your includes treks to much higher-elevation locations.

The short rainy season is in November and December which starts sprinkling at the end of October, and in equatorial Kenya, the moisture from these rains evaporates quickly. Roads and walking trails remain passable, so your activities should not be significantly impacted by the precipitation.
